Income Protection Insurance

Weekly or monthly payments if you are unable to work due to an accident or injury. Income Protection works when you can't.

What is income protection insurance?

Income Protection is a type of insurance which helps replace the income you’d lose if you couldn’t work because of an illness or injury.  We naturally insure all those things important to us, such as our home, car and even pets, so it makes sense to protect the thing that pays for it all, you and your income.

It is recommended that everyone of working age should consider taking an Income Protection policy, because regardless of how well and healthy you feel today, ill health or an injury can happen to anyone, at any time, and if it does then it can be tough to cope financially, as the bills will continue coming in.

What income protection products cover self-employed workers in the UK?

Income protection can cover both employed and self-employed people in the UK, as long as you’re working a minimum of 16 hours per week.  It does not cover redundancy or if you are unemployed (or working less than 16 hours per week).

If you're self-employed, income protection is arguably even more important than it is for someone in a salaried job. There's no employer sick pay to fall back on, no HR department sorting things out for you. If you can't work, the money simply stops, but the bills don't.

Which companies offer the best income protection policies in the UK?

There's no single "best" income protection policy because the right one for you depends on things like your job, your health, how long you could manage without pay, and how the policy defines being unable to work.

Each provider has their own strengths and weaknesses. Some are better on price, some are more flexible, and some are more generous when it comes to paying out a claim.

One thing most people don't realise is that the cheapest quote isn't always the best value. Some policies will only pay out if you can't do any job at all, not just your own. So if you're a plumber who can't climb under a sink anymore, a policy like that might say you could still work in a call centre and refuse your claim. That's a nasty surprise nobody needs.

Compare income protection providers in the UK

At The Insurance Helpline, we compare income protection policies from across the whole market, so we can match you with cover that actually fits your situation, not just the cheapest price. We look at things like how your job is classified, whether your premiums are guaranteed or could go up over time, and how the policy defines incapacity, because these details matter more than most people think.
